As the Oscar® 2009 fever continues to heat up toward a blazing conclusion on Feb 22, The UrbanWire eagerly makes its prediction for the winner of Best Supporting Actress.

The lovely 81st Annual Academy Awards® nominees for the Best Supporting Actress category are as follows:

Amy Adam

Besides 2 nominations in the Best Supporting Actress category, Doubt has also received 3 other nominations for Best Actress (Meryl Streep), Best Supporting Actor (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Best Adapted Screenplay (John Patrick Shanley).

Fans of Amy Adams would probably recognise her as the leading female role of Giselle in Walt Disney®’s Enchanted. This is not Adams’ first nomination, having previously been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 2005 and SAG for Junebug. She was also a Golden Globe nominee for Best Actress in A Motion Picture Musical or Comedy in 2007 for Enchanted. Even more recently, Adams was also a 2008 Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominee for the movie, Doubt.

However it is actress Viola Davis that gets a nod from Associated Content who suggests that she would snag the title. Film Misery begs to differ that the ten-minute scene in which Davis showcased her acting skills would get her the award as it was only a one mere scene in which she appeared in the movie.

Penélope Cruz is an Oscars favourite. A poll on Moviefone has also suggested Penélope Cruz would snag Best Supporting Actress and so has the Alternative Film Guide and Twitter Vlog. Predictions have been attributed to the fact that many of Director Woody Allen‘s supporting actresses did well in receiving Academy votes.

Taraji P. Henson has been nominated for several awards in the past for her roles in Boston Legal, Hustle & Flow, Talk to Me and others. In The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, she starred opposite Brad Pitt and played the role of Benjamin’s adoptive mother, much like Davis who played the role of Donald MIiller’s mother in Doubt.

Marisa Tomei

Marisa Tomei was a close contender for this award according to a poll by Moviefone (right behind Penélope Cruz) about their Oscar prediction. The Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actress in 1992 might just do it again for her role as a stripper and the love interest of the main male lead in The Wrestler.

UW Predicts:

The UrbanWire predicts Penélope Cruz would claim the title of Best Supporting Actress for her role as fiery tempered ex-wife of Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem)  in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
