About Writer’s Room

Founded in 2023, Writer’s Room is Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s student-led publishing house. It is home to two established youth-centric media brands, The UrbanWire and HYPE SG. We aim to engage minds and capture the emotional and visual perspectives of our little red dot through the stories we share.

Editor-In-Chief's Note

The capstone team for Writer’s Room Semester 2 of 2024 is cooking up a plethora of delectable content to close out 2024 and welcome us in to 2025! I’ve been impressed by their enthusiasm and drive so far. I’m sure you’ll see their passion for content shining through in the weeks ahead 🙂

James Sharpe, Editor-In-Chief of Writer’s Room

Writer's Room

Dear readers,

It’s an honor to continue this journey of storytelling and exploration with all of you. As your new Lead Editor, my goal is to share stories that inspire, challenge, and bring us closer together as a community.

For over two decades, The UrbanWire has been the voice of youth, presenting meaningful stories and perspectives. From local events to thought-provoking pieces, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy and take away.

I am beyond grateful to be the Editor of this publication, and I hope to continue building a space for learning, growth, and meaningful conversations. Stay tuned as we uncover fresh perspectives and share untold stories with you!

Cherlisa Lee, Editor of The UrbanWire.

Meet Joel, HYPE’s lead editor, Muay Thai enthusiast, and certified Wingstop expert. 👊 When he’s not throwing punches in the gym, he’s coming up with killer headlines and making your stories hit harder.

As a leader, Joel is constantly pushing the team to think bigger and bolder, all while keeping the energy high and the creative juices flowing. 🧠🧐

Sharp headlines, fresh ideas, and lots more coming your way, with a little help from his 16 piece Wingstop order of course! 👀🔥

🌊 Say Hi to Niyaz, The UrbanWire’s lead editor, who somehow makes juggling writing, deadlines and hiking a trail look easy.

He used to sail, and when he’s not deep in drafts, you’ll probably catch him swimming laps or framing the perfect shot in his camera roll. But don’t worry, he’s always got an eye for the next big idea, even if he’s miles out on the ocean catching some sun. ⛅️

Outdoors > Indoors, unless he’s editing your next read of course! 👀📸

Meet Kai Lin, our Deputy Editor for Content who has 17 tabs open in her brain (and on her laptop) – yet somehow makes it work ⁉️

When she’s not overseeing killer content, you’ll find her baking, jamming to music, or appreciating cursed memes. She’s got a heart for animals (especially hyraxes 🐱 ), a love for creativity, and a green tea addiction that fuels it all 🍵. And when she’s not bringing fresh ideas to life, she’s making sure there’s always room for a good laugh and a chill moment. 😎

Meet Dylan, our Deputy Editor for Content who’s always up for a weekend arcade challenge or adding another figure to his collection. 🎮🤖

He might be able to navigate through a foreign country without breaking a sweat, but ask him to find his way around Chinatown, and that’s a whole different story. 🗺

If he’s not writing fanfiction, you’ll probably catch him leveling up in real life (or at the arcade).

Writers Room. Class of 2026.

Say Hi to Chloe, our Deputy Editor of Production– she’s the one making sure all the behind-the-scenes stuff runs smoothly, so everything looks picture perfect when it hits your feed! 🧠💻

She’s into books, movies, and shows, (just not sci-fi or fantasy – “too fake to feel real,” in her words) Her ideal weekend? Some music, a good puzzle, or maybe building a tiny Lego set for fun. Bonus points if she has time to space out and daydream a little.☁️💭.

Writers Room. Class of 2026.

Meet Nadya, our Editorial Admin, who somehow manages to keep everything running smoothly among us.🎯✨

From dark burgundy to electric blue, she’s probably dyed her hair more times than the rest of us combined. When she’s not busy organising our Google Drive, you can find this #DedicatedMusician firing up the stage 🥁🪘or aggressively journaling her thoughts like it’s therapy, but cuter. 🖊💅

Basically? She’s got her life together so we don’t have to.

Writers Room. Class of 2026.

Meet Jet Lyn, our Graphic Designer who brings our ideas to life and the mind behind all the visuals you’ve seen so far.

She’s got a sharp eye and steady hand, but can’t sit through a movie or book without googling how it ends first. If she doesn’t know what’s coming, it’ll bug her for hours. 📚🎬

When she’s not knee-deep in projects for the team, you’ll probably catch her gaming, sketching up something new, or falling down an online shopping rabbit hole she definitely didn’t mean to start. 💸 She’s always chasing her next dopamine fix, on or off the clock.

Writers Room. Class of 2026.

Meet Gwen, our Social Media Head who’s always on the lookout for the next big trend, whether it’s a viral post or the best makeup deal on Telegram 🛍. Fun fact: she once thought reindeers were purely mythical (spoiler: they’re real 🦌).

She’s always got the inside scoop and a knack for making everything just a bit more exciting.💋

Writers Room. Class of 2026.

Meet Jorius, our Producer who keeps the shoots on track, the vibes in check, and ideas flowing. 🎬💡

If he’s not coming up with unique shot angles, he’s either experimenting with new recipes or obsessing over his ever growing mini car collection. He firmly believes that life is all about trying new things, and frankly, we couldn’t agree more.🍳

If you’re not having fun, you’re definitely doing it wrong, according to Jorius. 👻

Writers Room. Class of 2026.

Say Hi to Tristan, our videographer, nature enthusiast, and proud former catfish owner. 🎥🐟

He’s the guy behind the lens capturing all the aesthetic shots while simultaneously revealing things like “Oh yeah, I used to have a pet catfish” like that’s a normal sentence. 🤨

When he’s not filming or editing, you’ll probably see him going for a run, or chasing sunsets with his camera. If there’s something cool on screen, chances are Tristan made it look that way.🔥💯

No introductions needed, it’s Mr Sharpe, the Editor-in-chief and backbone of the Writers’ Room. Equal parts sharp wit and even sharper eye, he’s the reason our writing reads crisp, clean, and (mostly) typo-free. ✍️🧐

As both our lecturer and editorial lead, he’s the one who pushes us to think deeper, write better, and always question if that headline really works. You’ll rarely catch him missing a detail — unless it’s intentionally left for us to catch instead. 😶‍🌫️
