Down bustling Arab Street, you’ll expect no more than shop houses, textile shops and young people streaming into shops for some shisha smoking. If you don’t look closer, you will miss B Bakery, a café that foreigners flock to and locals find cozy.

B Bakery is a charming café located in the middle of Arab Street, and it is a 5-minute walk from Bugis MRT station. The place is relatively small, able to seat 50 people at most. It’s cosy with flowery wall decals and soft spotlights.

Interior

It started out 6 years ago as a bakery, making only bread and sandwiches. Only in 2007 did B Bakery introduce pastas and other dinner items in their menu. A point to note is that they make their own sauces and they use only fresh food.

Duck Salad

UrbanWire sampled Smoked Duck Salad with pomegranate dressing ($15) as an appetiser, for customers who want something other than the classic Chicken Caesar salad. Coupled with lettuce, mango and orange, the flavour of the smoke was brought out nicely. Do share the salad with someone as it may be too filling as an appetiser.

ChocolateCake

However, B Bakery is best known for their cakes and you cannot leave before trying at least one. There is the Chocolate Fudge Cake ($4.80) made with Valrhona chocolate, long thought to be the best in the world. We assure you that it’s a must-try. Luicious and rich, this is a real treat for all chocolate lovers.

Date Cake

Also, there is the Sticky Date Butterscotch Cake ($4.80) that is popular with regulars. If you’re taking the cake home, eat it after microwaving for 20 seconds because that’s when butterscotch is the right consistency, melting in your mouth along with the gooey cake. The taste almost resembles that of a Chinese prosperity cake or a “Huat Kueh”. However, the butterscotch is a touch overwhelming, so it takes someone with a sweet tooth to appreciate this.

B Bakery may seem like a nondescript eatery but do look beyond the exterior and you’ll find food that is worth the while because it’s great for those who like quiet Friday evenings with good food.
