The Pillowman

When The Pillowman first debuted in Lambeth, London, in 2003, the play won critical acclaim, nabbing UK’s Olivier Awardfor Best Play in 2004. In 2005, it was also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in New York. The New York Times called it a “spellbinding stunner of a play”. The Observer found it to be “Martin McDonagh’s most disturbing work to date”. The list of rave reviews goes on for this psychological thriller.

And now, the Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) is taking a stab at bringing The Pillowman to Singapore audiences. From Nov 9 to 25, The Pillowman finally comes to Singapore’s stage with tickets priced from $35 to $50.

For the play’s Asian premiere, SRT has assembled an illustrious group of local talent. Tracie Pang, a nominee for Best Director at this year’s ST Life! Awards, will be taking the reins as director, while a stellar cast of Adrian Pang, ST Life! Best Actor Award 2007 winner and host of various Singaporean television productions, Michael Corbidge (‘Best Actor’ nominee – Life! Theatre Awards 2007), Daniel Jenkins (‘Best Supporting Actor’ – Life! Theatre Awards 2007) and Shane Mardjuki (‘Best Ensemble’ nominee – Life! Theatre Awards 2007), will bring The Pillowman to life.

This disturbingly hilarious drama will leave you gripping your seat as the story of Katurian Katurian Katurian, a writer, and the 2 detectives, Tupolski and Ariel, unfolds.

Prolific Irish playwright, Martin McDonagh, begins the story with Tupolski and Ariel bringing Katurian in for interrogation. They discovered that his short stories seemed to bear an uncanny similarity to murders that have been occurring in Katurian’s hometown and they suspect his involvement to be more than just pen and paper. The 2 detectives begin to use ingenious methods to try and squeeze a confession out of Katurian and this is where the entertainment begins. Complete-review.com quoted from the play, saying that when the detectives questioned Katurian’s about his repetitive name, he just replied, “My parents were funny people”. With Katurian’s mischievous attitude and two detectives convinced that he’s their guy, the audience will be in for a ride.

In the SRT press release, Tracie Pang describes the play as “a wonderfully written piece where words count, and every moment grabs your innermost self, then tightens like a vice around it.”

The Pillowman, a sinisterly funny and brilliantly clever murder mystery will have you captured from start to finish. This is a must-watch for anyone who loves suspense mixed in with a good laugh. Definitely not a play to be missed, this disturbing story will stay with you long after you’ve left the theater.
