In a letter to his faithful younger brother dated exactly 2 years before his death, Vincent van Gogh’s words reflected the despair of a painter who found respite in the cocoon of his brother’s love. With familial love acting as a support for his artistic endeavors, it is no wonder that enthusiasts worldwide continue to revel in the glory that is van Gogh.

Van Gogh Alive

His Artistic Psyche

With over 3,000 images projected over 2 km2 (approximately 280 football fields) of fabric screen walls, be prepared to walk past gallery after gallery of masterpieces or choose to lie on the floor space to soak in the minute details of his paintings.

Van-Gogh---Starry-Night

From his hurried brushstrokes in The Starry Night where he painted the view from the asylum he was lodging at, to the carefully measured tones in Still Life: Vase with Twelve Sunflowers, van Gogh’s pieces reveal the quiet torment within him that was depression and the love-hate relationship he had with it, as it pushed his artistic talent while driving him into the throes of mental illness.

van Gogh in Singapore

While his magnum opus is still undecided among critics, others have skipped that debate and begun to luxuriate in his genius. With a concept similar to Van Gogh Alive, Singapore’s Macpherson Group Representation Constituency (GRC) introduced van Gogh to heartlanders by getting 350 volunteers to slather on quintessential van Gogh pieces onto the walls of void decks with the hope that residents can immerse themselves in van Gogh too.

But if an out-of-the-heartlands adventure is more of your thing, head down to the ArtScience Museum to drown in a refreshing van Gogh escapade before it ends this Oct.
