Festive Films proudly presents Funny Games, Austrian director and writer Michael Haneke’s cinematically 100% faithful remake of his 1997 original version of the film that was in German.

In the movie’s production notes, Haneke describes this cruel and unique thriller as “a reaction to a certain American Cinema, its violence, its naïveté, the way American cinema toys with human beings.”

In a nutshell

A middle-class family comprising of mother Anna (Naomi Watts), father George (Tim Roth) and young son Georgie (Devon Gearhart) take a well-deserved vacation in their summer home.

They meet their neighbours, Fred (Boyd Gaines) and Eve (Linda Moran) and arrange to play golf the very next morning.

Anna starts preparing dinner while George and Georgie work on their sailboat. All of a sudden, Anna finds a courteous young man all dressed casually in white at her doorstep who introduces himself as Peter (Brady Corbet), a guest of Fred and Eve. Peter asks for eggs because Eve is all out of them.

Anna is just about hands over the eggs but holds back. How did this young man enter their property? Peter says there’s a hole in the fence that Fred showed to him.

The queer happenings culminate in brutality as Peter’s similarly dressed companion, Paul (Michael Pitt), joins him in making the unsuspecting family’s remaining life a living hell with a series of sadistic games.
