When you think about the performing arts or sports, chances are that aerial arts isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. Aerial arts – not to be confused with aerial yoga or aerial dance – allows an individual to do a myriad of drops, tricks, and poses in the air with the help of an apparatus. The commonly seen apparatus includes the silks, hoops, straps, and trapeze – many of which one would see in circus acts.
The community of aerialists in Singapore is small, but vibrant nonetheless. Tucked away in the corner of Icon Village at Tanjong Pagar is Aerial Arts Collective–a dedicated aerial arts studio and training space for aspiring and professional aerialists alike. Thanks to its high ceilings, rigging points can reach a height of 8 metres, providing aerialists with all the space and height they need for training.
Aerial Arts Collective was founded by Pamela Chua who was looking for a space for herself and her friends to explore this creative art form. She shares more about the aerial arts scene in Singapore, common misconceptions, as well as the challenges of running Aerial Arts Collective – a rather unconventional career path in our commonly straight-laced Singapore.
