Review: Pies & Coffee

When Pies & Coffee asked themselves what else would complement their pies and coffee, the answer they hit upon was something that people wouldn’t expect – more coffee. To be specific – coffee–infused pies and desserts.

The café is already serving the Woolloomooloo blend from Sydney-based coffee roaster Toby’s Estate, a full–bodied, low-acidity flavor with notes of cocoa and spices, as well as a sweet caramel aroma. The coffee’s easy on the palate and pairs very well with their food.

Hence, it’s hardly a surprise the very same blend of coffee beans is used to craft 9 new items on their menu, and one of them is the Honey Chicken & Coffee Pie ($9.90). The only savory dish, the pie is filled with bite–sized chunks of chicken marinated with the Woolloomooloo blend and stew packaged in their signature buttery crust.  The taste is reminiscent of coffee pork ribs served at Tze Char restaurants [small coffee shop restaurants serving home-cooked dishes] where the hint of coffee is not immediately apparent but comes with a sweet aftertaste.

UrbanWire also got to taste the Coffee Addiction Cake (Slice: $6.90, Whole: $54). This decadent dessert is made of layers of soft, moist, fragrant sponge lathered with a lavish spread of almond nougatine and coffee mousse. This is then finished with a healthy sprinkle of hazelnut streusel and garnished with pistachios. Don’t be fooled by this towering slice because the cake is surprisingly light on taste buds, while still getting a nice kick of the coffee.

If you’re looking for a bit of French–fare, try their Coffee Éclair ($3.90), a rich coffee custard sandwiched between a light choux puff and topped with a Praline Feuilletine for a crunchy twist. This sinfully indulgent dessert strikes a great balance of the sweet and bold aromas of coffee.

Laidback and cozy, Pies & Coffee is good place to lull your time away. The coffee blends are brewed with meticulous attention to quality and the food designed to evoke your senses without burning a hole in your wallet. Whether you’re a caffeine junkie, or just looking for a sweet treat, wake up and smell the pies and coffee.
