6 men, 2 goal posts and 1 ball equate to … Futsal fun!

Held at Suntec Square on 6 Oct in the “Gillette Champions’ Arena”, Gillette’s 3-on-3 Futsal Challenge proved to be an exhilarating sport to play, and watch. 32 teams of feisty challengers pitted their skills against each other all the way from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm on a knock out basis. The final match that would determine the 2nd runner up and the champion saw the Geylang United Football Club (GUFC) team against “On the Run”.
Played in a mini scale court which barely had running space for 6 fully grown men and 2 goal posts each a little wider than the girth of a person, the Futsal Challenge was a good gauge as to how skilful the teams were.

In fact, the remaining 2 teams were so good, the final match ended in a 1-to-1 draw, leaving them in a free kick death match. This meant that whichever group which scores the 1st free kick wins.

But it’s not as easy as it sounds. The contenders had to score the free kick with their backs turned towards the goal post also meant that it was a test of luck, not so much skill.

“On the Run” had Lady Luck on their side that day as they scored the free kick in the finals, and also in their semi-finals against the Nanyang Junior College team. They also went home with $1,500 that lucky evening while the GUFC team walked away with $900 presented by Guest-of-Honour Mr Vaidyanath Swamy, Country CEO of Procter & Gamble.
