I’m always a meat lover. But to my surprise, when I went vegan for a week, I found myself enjoying plant-based meals more than I expected.
Veganism is a more extreme form of vegetarianism. Vegans stick to a diet that excludes animal products such as meat, dairy, eggs, honey as well as animal-derived ingredients like gelatin and omega-3 fatty acids. Some vegans also extend veganism to their lifestyle, choosing not to use wool and leather products.
While the term “veganism” has been around since 1944, it has become increasingly popular in recent years as more people are warming to the idea of a plant-based diet for its potential health benefits. There are also animal and nature lovers who commit to veganism as a way to reduce their impact on the environment. A study by the University of Oxford found that individuals can cut their carbon footprint from food by more than 70 per cent when they remove meat and dairy products from their diet.
Knowing the benefits of a vegan diet, I decided to give it a try for a week. Check out what’s on my menu in this video!
P.S.
If you’re interested in trying the vegan diet as well, I recommend that you ease into it by taking out animal products from your diet slowly. One way you can do this is to follow Mark Bittman’s VB6 Diet, where you follow a vegan diet until 6 pm before resuming your usual diet in the evenings.
Please do note that I am not a medical or nutritional expert and my experience is just for reference. Do seek expert advice before you commit to this diet on a long-term basis.
