No, it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke. In conjunction with the worldwide premiere of the Predators trailer, fans around the world were really granted an in-depth online interview earlier today with Robert Rodriguez, the producer of the latest film in the massively popular 1980s franchise, to be released in Singapore on July 8.

The UrbanWire spotlights some of the best questions asked during the live video chat ranging from casting for the film to the infamous weapons used by the Predators. Check out the just-released movie trailer after the article.

Q: Who is Nimrod Antal? He is a relatively unknown director so why did you choose him to direct such a big movie?
A: “He was always a director that I have admired. I needed to find a director because I was involved in another project at the time (Machete). I saw Armoredand I loved it. He had a really great focus for the movie (Predators) and wanted to bring it back to the hunt.

Q: What was the reason for casting Adrien Brody? Why not some actor that is more buff like Arnold? UW: Arnold Schwarzenegger played the lead in the original 1987 film.
A: “Well, Adrien plays a mercenary who reluctantly had to lead this group of people. He is not part of the group and it is a lot scarier because you can relate to him.”

Q: Where does this new movie fit in the Predator timeline?
A: “It is a follow up to the first Predator movie, which is why we named this film Predators instead of Predators 3.”

Q: What are the creative differences between this latest film and the original?
A: “We kept the classic Predator look but the approach we took with this film was to make it feel new and it was played as if the audience doesn’t know the original storyline.”

Q: Will Arnold make a cameo appearance?
A: “Maybe. Actually that answer is to make you go to the theatre and catch the movie. We knew he would be busy with his job as Governor (of California) and all, so it was never a confirmed thing. There might be a hint of him in the film. We will see about it for the sequel. He can’t be Governor forever.”

Q: We know you are a big fan of 3D movies so why is this movie not released in 3D?
A: “Maybe on another project. This film was on a short post-production schedule so we didn’t have the time to make it into a 3D film.”

Q: What about weapons? Are there any new weapons that the Predators would be using?
A: “Oh, there’s a bunch of new stuff. They’ve evolved a lot, implemented new hunting strategies and all. Of course we are re-introducing the things we loved from the first movie, you know: the shoulder mounts, blade in the arms, things like that.”

If this interview is anything to go by, Rodriguez appears to have made the right decisions to both appease old fans as well as attract people new to the Predator universe, possibly making it one of the biggest blockbuster hits of 2010.
