“Do monsters dream of success?”, “Can monsters be gay?”, “Do monsters fall in love?” So many questions, so little time. But if they made you pause and say, “What? Monsters falling in love? Sounds interesting!” Then you’ll be in for a real treat as The Singapore Repertory Theatre presents its latest production: Avenue Q.
Hailing from New York’s Broadway, Avenue Q is an award-winning musical, written by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx. The winner of several Tony Awards, most notably that of Best Musical and Best Original score, Avenue Q has been running on Broadway for the past five and a half years.
Those who grew up on Sesame Streetwill look back with fond memories as they watch this show as Sesame Street inspired Avenue Q. Almost every cast member is a monster puppet and, a la Sesame Street, there are frequent musical numbers relating to the characters’ situation.
However, as much as it was inspired by a fantastic children’s programme, Avenue Q is certainly not meant for kids. Dealing with adult themes, like racism between humans and monsters, pornography, as well as open homosexuality, Avenue Q targets a rather much older audience.
Be warned: Don’t bring your young nieces and nephews along, unless you’re prepared to answer some embarrassing questions.
