Food Review: Revelry

Make way for the new kid (or rather café) on the block, Revelry. A hidden gem along a row of rustic shop houses at Lorong Kilat, this carnival-inspired café boasts a fusion of Asian and Western flavors.

Founded by brother-and-sister duo, Chen Jiayi, 26 and Chen Jiahui, 29, Revelry serves both savory and sweet Belgian waffles creations devised from scratch paired with good coffee.

For starters, the café is furnished with fire-engine red chairs and colorful paintings done by Jiahui herself on the white walls, adding a whimsical and homely touch.

Another quirky vibe in the café is the elephant logo featured prominently at the entrance of the café. “We chose the elephant because it’s a friendly animal, and one of my favorite animals!” explains Jiayi.

Desserts for mains

Revelry rides on the trend of savory waffles with its Revelry Signature Burffle ($18), a juicy grilled beef patty sandwiched between 2 quarters of a Belgian waffle with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and their signature sauce. The latter, both savoury and slightly tangy, complements the beef and cheese. The waffle is crisp on the outside, and soft and airy inside, making the dish less heavy on the stomach.

Our next choice is O.K Waffle Pizza ($16) . The ‘O’ refers to otah chunks and ‘K’ refers to chopped kai-lan, both of which are drizzled with mozzarella.

Though we are nearly fooled by the slightly pungent aroma, the odd couple of Asian and Western ingredients surprisingly worked. The mozzarella and kai-lan help offset the spiciness of the otah, although it still packs quite a punch.

A spin on the classic

The classic fries & dip ($6.50) is a hearty serving of shoestring fries served with their signature lemongrass-infused dip. The lightly salted fries remains crispy for a long time and the dip tastes slightly minty, a departure from the familiar chilli sauce or ketchup.

Enjoy a cuppa

Using Allpress beans, Revelry’s coffee is made with a double ristretto shot that’s shorter and stronger than your average shot of espresso.

The soy flat white ($5.50) and cappuccino ($5) are full-bodied with a pleasant, chocolatey after-taste. The former has just the right amount of froth and nice latte art is skilfully poured despite using soymilk. The latter is light and not-too-frothy.

We notice our teaspoons had crystals encrusted on the tip, which makes us feel so chic while drinking our coffee.

Floating on cloud 9 literally

On Cloud 9 ($15) consisted of toasted marshmallows, blue candyfloss, vanilla ice cream and a generous dollop of lemon curd on a waffle. There’s even a liberal sprinkling of popping candy over the whole circus to stay in line with the carnival theme.

The toasted marshmallows are soft and gooey on the inside and the cotton candy melts in your mouth. If you’re shuddering at the hypothetical risk of diabetes, fret not as the lemon curd balances the taste. Or it could be our taste of happiness.

Revelry provides free wi-fi and sufficient power outlets, which is probably good news to café-hoppers and students looking for a conducive place to cram that report.

Despite the quirky décor, we felt the carnival-inspired theme wasn’t quite brought out, though the elephant did add an extra touch to the element of fun in the café.

The next time you’re in the neighbourhood or have a craving for unique waffles, drop by for a quiet afternoon of revelry. Or if you’re into elephants like the owner Jiayi, you might want to strike up a conversation with him as well.
