What makes Singapore so unique that we can call it uniquely Singapore?
By now it’s no longer a mere assumption that Singaporeans are labeled as kiasu [Hokkien translation, scared to lose out].
While some may see it as a calamity to be recognised this way, many more seem to take pride to be branded as such; we even have a comic character named after the term for goodness sake.
Do you embrace this unique identity or have any other opinions on what makes Singapore unique? How about expressing these ideas your way on a global platform? If this sounds like fun to you, here’s an opportunity for you to do so!
Be your own director and show the world what makes Singapore so unique to you with YourFilm.sg, a film competition for youths to get creative with moving images.
Organised for the first time by the South West Community Development Council, from now till Sep, the competition aims to give youths with a keen interest in the entertainment industry to develop this passion a step further and actually produce a film they can call their own. Winners get to take home up to $1000 worth of attractive cash and prizes.
So broaden your imagination and squeeze your creative juices with this year’s theme, YOUTHniquely Singapore. Script a short movie, film a documentary or even create an animation video and edit it to depict your individual views on what makes Singapore unique. With such a broad topic, you can almost discuss or tell a story about almost anything! Share a personal experience in story and move your audience, or express a view and inspire your audience.
Don’t worry about lacking proper filming equipment either. This competition accepts videos from all video recording devices including those from the readily accessible mobile phone cameras and digital cameras.
If you’re still hesitant about taking part because you lack the experience in making a film and don’t know where to begin, there are plenty of websites that will give you tutorials on scripting, the recording and editing process. If you’re still lost, we have included some useful tips and terms that will help you work it like you know your stuff!
Plan your shots. Have a clear idea of what angle to shoot from and what your frame (what appears on screen) consists of. You can create a shot list to help you plan your filming
Have sufficient light when recording. Lighting affects the mood and atmosphere of your film so always ensure there is sufficient lighting. Even low-budget productions shouldn’t compromise on quality because of lighting, so read up on how to create the best lighting effect for your film.
Good editing is crucial to make the film look good. Avoid making continuity boo-boos that even some major movies make. If it’s your first time editing a movie, use user-friendly editing software like Windows Movie Maker.
Include audio effects to enhance the film. Sound effects are important in creating a atmosphere (eg. sound of footsteps can create suspense). Production music can also change the mood of the scene. Find these audio files on the internet at royalty-free audio sites like Sounddogs.
Now that you have no more excuses not to join, you can take up this challenge and enjoy the joys of making your own film!
The only requirement is for you to be someone between 13 and 35 years of age living in Singapore. Registration is free and you can sign up individually or as a group.
So get “kiasu” and register now!
