Located at the heart of Sentosa, Skyline Luge may not stand out amidst the dozens of other entertainment options within the bustling island, but it’s back on the radar for many Singaporeans who seek an adrenaline-pumping experience not just in the day but also at night.
As inconspicuous as it may seem, Skyline Luge packs quite the punch when it comes to fun, as I learnt first-hand. But what exactly makes it such an appealing concept?
First things first—what is the Skyline Luge?
The Skyline Luge combines the joy of a ski-lift system with the thrill of a luge—a sledge-like, three-wheeled cart propelled by gravity and manoeuvred with a braking and steering system.
The attraction is divided into two parts: the Skyride takes you up the mountain, while the luge segment brings you down—with style, of course—through special tracks.
It is perhaps best described as the perfect combination between sledging and a Mario Kart-like experience. Blue shells not included.
Here are the top five reasons, in my opinion, why the Skyline Luge at Sentosa is a worthy stop for anyone who wishes to brighten their day.
1. The Skyride views are spectacular.
After wearing my protective gear, I sat on the open, cable car-like bench that took me up the Skyride. The journey gave me a majestic view of Sentosa island, the South China Sea and the lush greenery. If you’re lucky, you might see beautiful parrots and cockatoos too.
Acrophobics, be warned: The heights of the Skyride can be intimidating.
2. You can go fast (not furious).
Once I reached the luge tracks, it was time for the second half of the experience.
The luges are simple and comfortable. Much like sledges, you’re supposed to sit down and stretch your legs forward. The steering resembles a bike’s and is relatively easy to handle — simply twist to control the direction and pull to activate the brakes.
Since the luges are powered by gravity, most people around you start at the same speed. Your manoeuvring skill will determine how fast you make it to the end.
Believe me, the thrill of speeding up without a motor can grow quite addictive.
3. It’s an exciting way to compete with your friends.
Trying the luge gave me a taste of speed that felt unique, primarily since it is not motor-powered. I visited the Skyline Luge with a friend, and it quickly turned from a relaxing stroll into a fierce competition to see who would finish the track first.
Sadly, I didn’t. But that’s fine; all I wanted was a rematch to enjoy the experience again and again.
As the current COVID-19 safety measures allow for bookings in groups of up to five people (not counting children under 12), this means that large families and big friend groups would have to split into smaller units.
4. There are plenty of things to do.
While booking your reservation online, you can choose whether you want to experience two, three, or four luge rides. I’d say go for the latter as there are four different tracks to try, from the exotic Jungle trail, the adrenaline-pumping Expedition and Kupu Kupu trails, the longest track (688 m) and the scenic Dragon trail. All four tracks make up a combined 2.6 km of fun, and once you’re done with the ride, you can visit the nearby bars and restaurants to replenish your energy.
But that’s not all.
5. It turns into a magical place at night.
On Fridays and Saturdays, the Skyline Luge offers a Night Luge—a chance to enjoy the attractions at night. I can attest to the fact that the Skyline Luge is entirely different after sunset.
The Skyride gave me a breathtaking view of the city lights in the distance against the night sky. The luge rides felt magical with the tracks glowing in vibrant neon hues. That’s when I thought: my first visit to the Skyline Luge certainly won’t be the last.
