Whips Cupcakes @ Icon Village (Tanjong Pagar)
Maria Wilson, 21, the owner of Whips Cupcakes, opened the modest outlet at Icon Village (Tanjong Pagar) 4 months ago and was inspired to open her cupcake store after visiting Georgetown Cupcake during her studies in the US and eating almost daily what she describes as “the best cupcakes of my life”.
Her store manager and baker, Amber Chan, 20, ensures quality cupcakes for customers by using the “real stuff” such as the finest espresso in their coffee cupcakes or pure vanilla extract instead of imitation ones. All cupcakes are also baked fresh everyday.

Amber is, in fact, a Mass Communication graduate from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, but it was her passion in “baking… in the end that overpowered [her] love for radio.” According to her, the mini cupcakes are the most popular with office ladies who like popping by for something small and sweet.
Most of the 150 mini and 70 regular cupcakes at the outlet were sold out when UrbanWire visited at around 3.30pm in the afternoon. Whips Cupcakes’ signature flavours include Red Velvet, Chocolate, Nutella, Peanut Butter, Vanilla, Pina Colada and Coffee.
We highly recommend the Nutella and their best selling Red Velvet cupcakes. Nutella, the sweetest of the selection, is a gooey confection of fluffy and light vanilla cake with decadent hazelnut chocolate filling and a dose of Nutella frosting on top.
Rows and rows of delicious Red Velvet cupcakes
The slightly sweet taste of the Red Velvet cupcakes is balanced with the tangy taste of the cream cheese frosting, a good combination for those who like something different. As with all the others at Whips Cupcakes, the Red Velvet is soft and moist with generous doses of frosting swirls. Best of all, the cupcakes are not overly sweet or too cloying for the tastebuds.
A classic flavour every cupcake lover must try
The Chocolate cupcake is also a must-have for those with a sweet tooth. Valrhona cocoa powder, a top-notch brand from France, goes into these treats to give a dense brownie-like texture; perfect with the coat of chocolate ganache on top.
Only available till mid-January
To add to the festive cheer this month, Whips Cupcakes has just launched three new flavours: Apple Crumble, Cranberry and Lemon.
UrbanWire tried the Apple Crumble as recommended by Maria, which is topped with sweet crumbly bits on top, apple slices below and flavoured with a touch of cinnamon. It reminds one of apple pie and the sweetness level is just right.
With cupcakes that taste this good, why settle for the minis? A regular cupcake goes for $3.50 while a mini goes for $1. A box of 9 regular cupcakes or 25 mini ones is priced at $25.
