“At the beginning, you’re like a sheep, all downy, chewy and dressed warmly. But when love reaches the end of the road, and all the wool has fallen off, only then do you admit to being a cat.”
– Adapted from Cherry Boom Guai Guai CD booklet
Does that statement make any sense to you? Do you have a desire to showcase your talent on stage and wow the crowd with your cool showmanship? Do you like Cherry Boom songs? Have you even heard of Cherry Boom?
If you have heard of them and love them more than life itself, then you should be overjoyed because Universal Music has started the “Cherry Boom Guai Guai” impersonation contest from Jul to Sep.
And you don’t even need to be able to play any musical instruments. As long as you’re good at impersonating Cherry Boom, that’s all that matters.
So if you think you’ve got what it takes to enter this contest, don’t hesitate. But perhaps you might want to read some pointers that we at the UrbanWire have prepared just for you!
Some pointers:
To pass off as Taiwanese rock band Cherry Boom, form a group of 4 with a vocalist, a guitarist, a bassist and a drummer. Since Cherry Boom’s an all-girl group and this is after all, an impersonation contest, the guys who wish to join will have to dress up as girls. Get hair extensions, put on some make-up, walk and talk like a girl, and… you get the idea.
But before you get too freaked out, we were just kidding! Even if you really wanted to do that, we won’t let you try. What if people start thinking that Cherry Boom was actually an all-guy group pretending to be girls, since they’re all so cool? Hence, we’d rather not take the risk here and spoil the girls’ reputation.
So get the dressing style right and you’ll be quite safe. Also, your group’s ability to perform their songs and deliver the appropriate feel and mood will be crucial. As long as you’re up to the challenge, regardless of gender, race or language, you’re invited to take part in the competition. Oh, and a very important rule to note – at least one member of the group must be from either Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), Singapore Polytechnic (SP) or Republic Polytechnic (RP).
Taking up the challenge:
Send your particulars (name of every member and their contact details) as well as the title of the Cherry Boom song your group wishes to perform to the respective e-mail address, depending on your school.
More details about the selection rounds will be given to contestants at a later date.
The closing date for entries is Jul 23
Time to practise hard:
The selection rounds will be held in end Jul, after all the entries are in.
The Finals will be held in early Aug, videos of the finalists will be posted online at mypaper.sg to allow the public to cast votes to support their favourite band. The votes will account for a percentage of the final marks.
If your group wins
1st Prize: CD hamper worth $800
