If you’ve noticed our national soccer boys looking different on the pitch in their past 2 games

against Australia and Lebanon on Mar 22 and Mar 26 respectively, it’s probably because the team has undergone a fashion makeover!

The new national team kit was launched by the national team’s sponsor, Nike, together with the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) on Mar 20 after half a year of design collaboration between Nike’s global design team and the FAS.

“With this launch, Nike has delivered on our commitment made during the announcement of our strategic partnership with FAS in January 07; to allow the Singapore national football teams access to premium products both on-pitch and in training,” said Tim Parkinson, the Marketing Director for Nike Southeast Asia, in the official press release.

In the release, FAS President Ho Peng Kee was also optimistic about the new team kit’s benefiting the national squad.

“We believe that the new team kit will reinforce our Lions’ pride and identity and helps set them up for success,” he said.

Jersey Technology

This new outfit for our national soccer team boasts of many technical features that many Nike-sponsored top international teams, like Brazil and Portugal, enjoy in their team kits.

The jerseys employ Nike FIT DRY technology for the optimum combination of snugness and functionality, keeping players feeling as cool and dry as possible.

Players also get greater freedom of movement with the jerseys’ Dynamic fit silhouette, which is a streamlined cutting designed to fit each player’s body perfectly. This feature also lowers the chances of opponents using dirty tactics like jersey-pulling in matches.

Jersey Significance

Who needs a Social Studies textbook when virtually our national identity can be found in the 2 jerseys?

The Home Team Kit reflects Singapore’s National Colour; Red, which represents the nation’s shared values of universal brotherhood and hence equality of all. Red is also a common symbol of luck and courage among the main racial groups in Singapore: Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian.

The Away Team Kit is made with Marina Blue fabric that is reminiscent ofprevious national jerseys of the team, serving as a reminder to players of how far the team has come over the years. This unique shade of blue also symbolises Singapore’s identity as an island city surrounded by peaceful waters.

On both jerseys, the National Flag is placed on the left breast, just over the players’ hearts, to symbolise the respect and honour every player has for his country, which he’s playing for.

The lion, another national symbol, is also included in the form of a specially-designed lion head printed on the back inner collar and is said in the press release to represent courage, strength and excellence and echo the fighting spirit and resilience which the national team has in the face of adversity.

And They Say…

National soccer captain and skipper Indra Sahdan Daud, who is seen posing in the Away Kit, is delighted with the new team kit.

He’s quoted in the release, saying, “I like the snug fit better, as I will no longer have to worry about being pulled down by defenders and in turn, this will mean more chances or scoring and of course, winning!”

Indra’s teammate, midfielder Hariss Harun, who poses in the Home Kit, feels that the new team kit brings the fans and the players closer.

“I believe that our Singapore football fans will be able to connect with this identity and support us in our upcoming matches,” he added in the press release.
