In October 1998, Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die, tied to a fence on the outskirts ofLaramie, Wyoming. It was later revealed from the police investigation that he was targeted because of his sexual orientation. Five weeks later, the Tectonic Theatre Project went to Laramie, and over the course of the next year, conducted more than 200 interviews with the people of the town. From these, the play was written, and chronicles the life of the town in the aftermath of the murder.
Shepard’s story still reverberates, urging us on to confront the destructive power of bullying and hate, in all forms.
“Theatre should matter, and The Laramie Project reminds us, exhilaratingly and compellingly, why it’s so necessary for us to come together, as an audience to share stories that help us understand who we are and demonstrate the power of the human spirit to triumph over bigotry and violence,” Daniel Jenkins, Director and Associate Director of SRT on why he chose this play as The Young Co.’s graduation show.
