XTRA Market, organised by Farmly SG, is a new venture that was inspired by a hackathon brainstorm with the goal of increasing accessibility to fresh goods. The market was started by two Ngee Ann Polytechnic students who wanted to establish a direct line of communication between local farmers and the community.
Come explore the finest offerings of Farmly SG’s XTRA Market with us! These are the event’s highlights!
#1: A campus wet market
Organic mushrooms grown from wood chips and used coffee grounds, pesticide-free spinach ice cream, and fish nuggets made with fresh fish, right from the chiller were on full display at the market.
On top of this, all the base ingredients were available for purchase, which made us feel like we were actually at our neighbourhood wet market! The freshness and organic background justified the slightly higher prices in comparison to the foods at your usual local market.
#2: Vintage thrifting galore
From caps by Salty Thrifts to oversized graphic band tees by Spooder Grail, the thrifting booths at the Market offered a whole range of clothing options, enough to curate a whole new wardrobe.
It not only provided cost-friendly and trendy shopping options for students who stopped by, but also primarily showcased how thrifting could give clothes a second life.
#3: Student-run DIY booths
Through collaborative efforts by BA Green, NP Sandbox, and Farmly SG, various creative booths were stationed at the Atrium, offering second-hand crystals as free gifts for participating in a workshop to create personalised keychains out of bottle caps and can tabs. Coffee from Brewo Coffee, a brand founded by students of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, was also sold at the food booths.
Additionally, at the Makers’ Academy in a neighbouring block, sewing workshops were held to transform old clothes into reusable cloth bags. Talk about reinvention!
