Canadian Pizza launched their exclusive National Day Menu on 15th July, introducing us to some of their limited-time local flavours that are sure to spark the curiosity of fellow Singaporeans or pizza-lovers out there.
1. Hainanese “Chicken Rice” Pizza – $30.70 for 2
Inspired by its namesake, this unique pizza encompasses everything that you’d expect from the renowned local delight – the fragrance of garlic and ginger, accompanied by generous amounts of sweet black sauce, huge chunks of chicken (of course), and not forgetting the infamous coriander.
I’m sure many would be sceptical about the thought of coriander on pizza (or coriander on anything at all!), but fortunately, Canadian Pizza did not disappoint with their latest creation.
When we took our first bite into the pizza, we were hit by the taste of the Hainanese-style-based sauce. The umami flavour from the garlic-intense sauce pairs harmoniously with the sweet sauce and cucumbers that top the pizza.
Sadly, the marinated chicken tasted like your typical chicken topping that is seemingly always too dry, but thankfully, it was complimented well by the other toppings.
However, what really stood out was the coriander. Truly the underdog, the hint of bitterness and spice from the usually shunned vegetable elevated the pizza by giving it an additional layer of depth, transforming this unassuming pizza into a dish that will indulge your taste buds with a symphony of flavours.
For spice-lovers out there, each pizza comes with a garlic chilli dip that resembles the typical chicken rice chilli. Canadian Pizza’s version of the chilli differs from the normal chicken rice chilli, being a tinge sweeter than the original but still just as spicy, if not more. The first taste might throw some people off, but rest assured, a drizzle of the chilli on top of a slice will give spice-lovers the spicy kick they need to satisfy their cravings.
2. Milo Churros – $13.90 for 8pcs
Canadian Pizza’s Milo churros come coated in Milo powder, along with a condensed milk dip. When the churros arrived, they were warm and had a delicate crunch on the outside, with a comforting softness on the inside. When it comes to texture and flavours, the churros’ buttery taste paired excellently with the sweetness from the Milo powder and the condensed milk dip.
Add-ons such as chocolate dip, golden syrup, marshmallows, and sprinkles are also available, but personally, we felt that the condensed milk dip complimented the churros the best!
3. Otak! – $8.90 for 6pcs
The otah-filled spring roll arrived crisp and warm. Biting into it, the first thing you’ll notice is the crunch from the spring roll skin, followed by a noticeable spicy kick from the otah filling. The filling itself was generous, and you are able to see small bits of fish inside, just as you can with actual otah. This intriguing side dish pairs well with the Hainanese “Chicken Rice” Pizza. Think unique local flavours with a twist!
