The word pescetarian in Dann’s Daily Pescetarian Cafe might trip you up, but that just means you shouldn’t expect any meat on their menu, only seafood and what vegetarians will be comfortable with having.
Regulars also read this as quality food prepared with lots of passion and care by its owners, Christina and Xing, at a modest joint they named after their 6-year-old son, Dann.
Chris and Xing, had adopted this pescetarian diet when she delivered their son. Watching him grow into a strong young lad, the couple are convinced of the health benefits and so want to share these and the lifestyle they enjoy through the cafe.
How they do this is by cutting all meat out, preparing every dish with simple natural ingredients, no artificial flavourings and with alkaline water (more about that later!).
UrbanWire was quite blown away by the Fish Soup ($8). It’s a must-try for those who like their soups strong and flavourful. A spicy gingery taste we loved gave way to a sweet aftertaste, thanks to the thick slices of fresh mackerel and shiitake mushrooms.
Our next favourite is the Brown and Wild Rice Salad ($6). The rice salad at Dann’s Daily is chewy and has a refreshing taste as it’s cooked with organic sprouts and onions fried with grapeseed oil. Just top up $4 to add on a soup and a curry. Chris likes to experiment and cook up new ideas at the cafe so the curry and stew changes from time to time. Our curry was prepared with tofu and pumpkin – surprisingly good as I’m not a fan of pumpkin. The curry is creamy and not too spicy.
UrbanWire gladly welcomes anything that comes with chocolate and this unique creation by Chris is the Gula Melaka Cupcakes ($3.50). No worries if you’re lactose intolerant as Chris uses soy milk, which is less fattening, along with organic raw sugar and unbleached flour. We like the cake’s moist texture and had fun dipping it into the Gula Melaka (palm sugar) and Chocolate sauce.
Desserts come hand in hand with aromatic coffee especially when their beans (imported from Mexico) are organic and freshly brewed at the cafe. Xing, the coffee fanatic, is in charge of the beverages. The density and thickness of the cups help to retainthe richness and flavour of the coffee which made our Mocha ($5) that much sweeter and more fragrant. You can even try the Teeccino ($5), a great alternative if you’re allergic to caffeine.
Each dish and drink at Dann’s Daily is prepared with alkaline water, which helps to reduce acidity in our bodies. While there was a recent debate in the newspapers about how scientific or not the value of this water is, the owners believe microclusters in the water help to reinforce the taste of our food. As diners, all we can say is maybe that’s why everything tasted so good to us. Plus, alkaline water aids detoxification and better digestion. So girls on a diet, you know where to go.
