The 7th lunar month (the “Hungry Ghost Festival”) has nothing on Halloween’s power to petrify the living.

While this ghoulish tradition isn’t an indigenous celebration in Singapore, Halloween’s being embraced so fervently, especially among youths, that there are more than enough venues and parties you can spook yourself out at for an unforgettable night of screams and horrors. At UrbanWire, we hope this short roundup will help you decide where to get your fill of spine-chilling haunted trails.

1. Halloween Horror Nights
If you’ve been to Halloween Horror Nights before, be prepared for thrice the fear and excitement this year with 3 different scare zones catered to about every scare palate. With supernatural beings of both Eastern and Western origins, there has to be something at Halloween Horror Nights that will awaken your worst nightmares.

UrbanWire sampled Halloween Horror Nights, and this is what we say.

To recap, you should go if:
You appreciate both Eastern and Western horror
There is nothing scarier than poltergeist and vengeful Chinese ghosts, imagine having to deal with them both at the same place. We shudder at the thought of those brave enough to try.

2. Sentosa Spooktacular

If you thought Thai horror movie Shutter was absolutely hair-raising, imagine going through the same ordeal as protagonist Thun. Working with GMM Tai Hub Co. Ltd (GTH), Sentosa Spooktacular takes you through the stories of critically-acclaimed Thai films, Coming Soon, Shutter, Body, Dormand Pee Mak. We know Thailand churns out the creepiest horror movies in the world (with the exception of Japan’s The Ring) due to their centuries-old beliefs and superstitions.

Now in its fifth run, this is the first time that Spooktacular has sought a collaborator. This joint-effort very nearly didn’t happen as Spooktacular’s e-mail to them went into their spam folder. We’re thankful GTH decided to check their spam that day.

To recap, you should go if:
You love an experience as close to the real thing as possible.
With extensive attention to detail and props (the tallest one being 10m high), you can expect to be fully immersed and stepping in the shoes of the protagonists in the various Thai movies. Put it this way, it was a photographer’s heaven at Shutter with a dark room (or trail) and a horrible experience trying not to walk into a dismembered corpse at Body’s trail.

You want something aside from merely walking during the trail
Be prepared for activities aside from merely walking and praying that you look brave enough so no one can laugh at you.

3. Museum of Horrors
As a result of having people from such different backgrounds, ethnicities and religions, Singapore’s home to innumerable superstitions, folklore and urban legends.

This trail leads you from 1 haunted spot of Singapore to another; think Bedok Reservoir with its creepily high number of suicide incidents and Old Tampines Road with its numerous supernatural sightings.

With the help of Singapore Polytechnic students, Museum of Horrors revolves around the tale of twin sisters. 1 murdered the other the day before her sister was set to marry, out of resentment. The groom, unable to accept the death, asks for the murderer’s hand in marriage instead. Infuriated, the dead sister possesses her twin and slaughters everyone at the wedding before forcing her twin to take her own life.  The dead bride now seeks vengeance, looking for the wedding ring that belonged to her.

To recap, you should go if:
You love local culture
With 7 different set ups of infamous reportedly haunted spots in Singapore, including that of Bedok reservoir, you save the trouble of combing the island to tread through these haunted places yourself. UrbanWire thoroughly enjoyed our time there as we recollected the stories told about not-quite-human beings at those areas.

You want a good scare
This trail gave us something different. With a lift in the trail itself, and we all know how creepy being alone in an elevator can get, it’s hard not to feel the chills as you’re trapped in that cube with other scared individuals. The other thing you’ll appreciate is its actors, many of whom have make-up awfully similar, of even identical, to their mannequin counterparts. The result? Having the living daylights scared out of you as you walk past something you thought was a mannequin.
