Handsome Suit is a hilarious comedy about a physically unattractive guy who turns into a hunk whenever he dons a special suit.
Takuro (Muga Tsukaji) is our ugly main character, who makes up for his looks with a heart of gold and humour. He works at a chef in his mother’s diner and falls in love with his beautiful part-time worker, Hiroko (Keiko Kitagawa).
To no one’s surprise, he’s rejected when he confesses his love towards Hiroko. Takuro firmly believes the reason for his rejection is his looks. But before he even has time to consider plastic surgery, he meets a salesman who introduces him to the ‘Handsome Suit’. Thus begins his double life as the gorgeous model, Annin Hikariyama and the unappealing chef, Takuro.
The Good:
The movie is funny throughout in depicting Takuro’s adventures and experiences. You’ll find yourself laughing at his awkward transformation into a hunk and his bid to lead both lives.
If you were to look deeper into the movie’s humour, you’ll most likely find yourself asking:
Would you discard everything to pursue superficial perfection?
Is what is on the outside what ultimately counts?
I know I wondered about these 2 questions when Takuro had to choose between his 2 personas.
The way the movie shows its main character’s conflicting personalities as Annin and Takuro draws you into the plot and you will find yourself relating with Takuro.
The Bad:
The physical-beauty-is-important storyline kind of reminds you of both the Shrek movies and the Korean movie, 200 Pounds Beauty. Despite some similarities, The Handsome Suit certainly has some refreshing twists in the plot to keep you guessing about Takuro’s eventual decision whether to remain ugly or become handsome. Look out for the unexpected final plot twist!
The Ugly:
The only ugly aspect of the movie is Takuro and the suit, which looks like a cross between Pillsbury Doughboy and the Michelin Mascot.
The Verdict:
Watch this movie! Takuro may be ugly but The Handsome Suit is definitely adorable.
