50 Oscars, 2 statuettes that belonged to Hollywood legends, and 1 statuette for the public to hold will be on display at Meet the Oscars, New York at Times Square Studios in New York City beginning on Feb 12, at noon. The exhibition will remain open through Feb 24.
Meet the Oscars, New York provides visitors the opportunity to walk among the displays and see the statuettes that were awarded to Clark Gable for his performance in It Happened One Night (1934) and to Bette Davis for her performance in Jezebel (1938). Also, for the first time in New York City, visitors will be able to be photographed holding an Oscar®.
The other 50 statuettes featured in the exhibition will be presented to winners at a future Academy Awards® presentation. (The statuettes on display in Meet the Oscars, Los Angeles from Feb 9 through 24 will be awarded to winners at the 79th Academy Awards ceremony on Feb 25.)
Each Oscar weighs in at 8½ pounds and stands 13½ inches tall. Handmade annually by R.S. Owens & Company in Chicago, the statuettes are made of britannia, a metal alloy, and are plated in copper, nickel, silver and 24-karat gold.
Meet the Oscars, New York will be open daily from 11 am to 7 pm.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2006 will be presented on Feb 25 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network at 5 pm PST (8 pm EST), beginning with a half-hour arrivals segment, The Road to the Oscars.
