In its running for the second time, the m:idea Youth Choice Awards on Jan 15 saw local celebrities gracing the red carpet at *SCAPE Warehouse in their wacky, eye-catching outfits. It was a day of fun, glitz and glamour with lots of laughs in between.
The most notable celebrity was funny woman and Fly Entertainment founder, Irene Ang,
Irene Ang
A self-proclaimed lover of mixing vintage pieces with modern items, Irene shared with UrbanWire how she put together her quirky outfit for the event.
“Well, I woke up this morning feeling inspired to wear boots. It was cold so I put on a vintage jacket. I’m very pragmatic one! I always wear things that I’m comfortable in,” she exclaimed excitedly.
We dare say it was a pretty wise move to mix her red vintage jacket which she bought from New York to spruce up her cheap $5 white tee. Naturally drawn to sales like any Singaporean, Irene raved about how she bought the Guess jeans and Miss Sixty boots at a heftily discounted price.
“Boots are always good for artistes! I’m a klutz in heels so boots are good for me. They give me the height and the ‘power’ over others,” the 42-year-old proclaimed with laughter.
Magic Babe ‘Ning’
Boots aren’t only her shoes of choice, as Magic Babe ‘Ning’ swears by them as well. She’s one half of Singapore’s most famous celebrity magic duo alongside J C Sum,
“I have many pairs of boots in my closet! Knee-highs are usually for performances though,” she said. It’s no surprise that the illusionist’s closet is filled with mostly black items, thus the top-to-toe black outfit for the event.
Ning cited her black Harley Davidson leather jacket with pink letterings and Swarovski Crystal spider necklace as her favourites.
She explained, “I love the smell of leather! As for spiders, I think it represents a strong female character so I always wear a spider necklace whenever I perform.”
The Muttons
The Muttons, local 987fm radio deejays, also put on the bling for the red carpet.
“Justin bought a tee shirt, put glue and rolled on rhinestones so he came in this tee shirt. Vernon, on the other hand, bought a cat and laid on it so it’s now flat on his shirt,” said The Muttons, before breaking into a chorus of infectious laughter that cracked everyone up.
The funny duo were winners for “Celebrity Duo I Wanna Chill With”, in which lovebirds, Soo Kui Jien and Sarah Tan, were nominated for.
Sarah Tan & Kui Jien
After hilarious banter about how they were there for the sole purpose of meeting Nat Ho, they finally composed themselves to talk about their outfits.
The couple stated preferring their clothes simple and clean as Kui Jien pointed out that his shirt and shoes are from Adidas.
Said Sarah, the mother of a 2-year-old boy, “Dresses are always easy to wear. You don’t have to think too much about it so I put on a Warehouse dress today.”
With a figure like hers after childbirth, one can be sure that anything she had chosen to wear would have been easy on the eyes.
Nat Ho
Speaking of great physique, local hunk Nat Ho could probably have walked down the red carpet in just shorts and still look gorgeous as usual.
The ex-MediaCorp artiste had an array of fans from NATurallyNat who came down to support him at the event.
Ris Low
Our favourite ex-Miss Singapore World 2009, Ris Low, made a dramatic entrance as usual by coming after the event, citing rain and bad traffic condition for her timing. Perhaps, she was trying to reenact her April Fool prank on 987FM?
She appeared in a low-cut maxi dress last year but came casually dressed in a long tee, black leggings and a tie-up wedges this year.
When asked to describe her personal style, Ris immediately said, “Luan luan lai!” which literally translate to “anyhow”. The celeb left hurriedly with her boyfriend in tow after receiving her award at the photowall.
But hey, like what Irene Ang said, “It’s a bonus that we’re celebrities, we can wear unconventional stuff and get away with it.”
Other appearances on the red carpet included talented musicians duo Jack & Rai, local band West Grand Boulevard, blogger Jessica Loh, ex-Singapore Idol 3 contestant Duane Ho and One Moment of Glory, runner up Luminiq Crew.
