What comes to your mind when someone mentions the term ‘fine dining’? Most people will have the preconceived notion that fine dining would be expensive and overly formal.
However, Pasta Stylo proves them wrong as it offers diners fine dining at affordable prices.
Located right next to Farrer Park MRT station, this restaurant certainly stands out. It’s sensually decorated with red and black hues, partnered with conspicuously placed and stylishly attired mannequins representing the motto of this unique bistro – “The difference is in our dressing. It’s fashionably delicious.”
The menu is comprehensively laid out into various sections such as “Singapore Creations” and “International Inspirations” – basically fusion dishes.
After explaining the concepts of his themed restaurant, the founder of Pasta Stylo, Mr Alvin Koh, recommended a few dishes to UrbanWire.
Firstly, for appetizers, we were given the Stylo Wrap ($5.80), which is basically Nasi Lemak (coconut flavoured rice with peanuts, ikan-bilis, fried egg and sambal) wrapped up like a popiah in chewy, translucent Vietnamese rice skin. However, one interesting fact about the coconut ‘rice’ would be that it is actually risoni, a succulent and smooth type of pasta that resembles rice.
The scrumptious appetizer was followed by the main courses – the Singapore Chili Crab Spaghetti, Tokio Sake Salmon Linguine and Sambal Belachan Chicken Penne.
The Singapore Chili Crab Spaghetti stole the limelight with its unbeatable price of $9.90. Prices aside, this Singapore creation is a top seller at Pasta Stylo. It beckoned to us with the aroma of the slightly spicy sauce and its deliciously smooth pasta. The only gripe would be that in order to taste the juicy bits of crab meat, one has to manually pry apart the pincers and do it the “dirty” way.
Later, we were served the Tokio Sake Salmon Linguine ($13.80), a Japan-inspired dish prepared with Sake and seaweed, giving it the sweet flavour that makes it a hot favourite. The baked salmon was slightly dry, but was compensated by the delicious linguine cooked with the unique blend of ingredients.
This gastronomically pleasing experience was wrapped up with A Hot Sweet Date ($8), a dessert with bananas baked in rich sauce of caramelized honey and cinnamon with a home made date cake, artfully drizzled with chocolate sauce into a shape of a girl’s face. The date cake was sinfully delectable. Every bite was chewy and laden with the right amount of sweetness, and the bananas were soft and flavourful.
