Sammi Cheng is an enigmatic and an undisputedly talented artiste. With a portfolio of singing awards from all over Asia attesting to her vocal quality, she also has a phenomenal stage presence. Should there be any doubt, it’s probably because you’ve missed Sammi Cheng’s Show Mi concert Oct 13 held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Barely an hour before the start of Show Mi, a crowd pumped up with anticipation had already gathered outside the Indoor Stadium waiting for the gates to open to a night of aural and visual entertainment by the pop diva. As the countdown went into the final 15 minutes, the looming crowd grew increasingly excited and it is not hard to understand why.
The comeback concert tour, held almost 2 years after Sammi left the stage, already made a big bang with concerts in Hong Kong, the United States, Canada and Malaysia. So it’s no wonder how the buzz about her 1st concert tour after her much-too-long break reached our reclaimed shores and the ears of her loyal fans.
The excitement moments before the concert was palpable wand when Sammi finally came onto stage after being fashionably late for about half an hour, the air crackled with electricity as fans cheered.
Throughout the entire concert, Sammi kept the crowd highly entertained. The opening number “Only You Are Irreplaceable” was met with an overwhelming response. At the start of the concert, Sammi sported a jet-black ‘do and that was an indication of how the night was to be since her costumes for throughout the night varied far and many through out the entire 2 hours.
She performed hits like “Long Live Love”, “Performance Time” and “Traffic Light”. Singapore’s very own Stefanie Sun was also on stage and sang with Sammi “Green Light” and “Encounter”. Stefanie also sang “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough” before leaving.
Rushing in and out of the changing room a mind-blowing 6 times, Sammi played a clown, a rock and roll chick and at one point of time, she was even a typical Hong Kong gangster. Her many radical costume changes (this includes the love-it-or-hate-it Japanese ghost) certainly had her living up to her name as a trendsetter in the Hong Kong fashion industry. After all, much time has passed yet no one has managed to carry off the Nike-shaped eyebrows made popular by her a few years ago, no?
During intervals of the concert when she talked about her absence from the stage – they were really rest stops for her to catch her breath from all the vigorous dancing – she talked about her absence from the music scene and just before making her exit, she thanked her fans with a final song “Beauty for Life”.
