Chances are you’ve heard horrific stories of Brazilian waxing. Stories of the agonising pain petrified me before I went for my first Brazilian on May 5, but I had mine done at Pink Parlour and I’m converted.
Tucked away amongst many plain double-storey shophouses along Mohamed Sultan Road, this 2-year-old establishment shockingly opens up into a fashionable beauty parlour with pink and black décor contrasting starkly with its humble shophouse appearance.
You immediately sense its popularity with young and trendy women as a number of them chat away while getting their manicure done and sipping their complimentary teas or coffees.
And why wouldn’t it be popular with such warm and welcoming service. Even the Pink Parlour’s manager, Wendi Chan, greeted her customers at the door. Being in the skincare and spa industry for at least 3 years, she seemed very ‘hands on’ with her establishment; dressed in almost the same attire as her staff. She soon led me to the waxing room as she jokingly tried to calm me down.
Blending serenity and simplicity, the hygienic waxing room with its romantic dim lights and relaxing nature sounds in the background distracted me from my waxing worries.
It had state-of-the- art equipment like an electric hot wax pot that has 2 separate bowls, a separate side lamp which illuminates those almost-invisible hairs and a whole corner filled with pre-wax and post-wax lotion from Caron Laboratories.
The pre-waxing process was very thorough. As Wendi prepped me, she explained that all their products contained Pure Tea Tree Oil for their soothing and cleansing properties and suitability for even sensitive skin.
She added that they prepped beginners like myself longer to ensure we stayed comfortable. Since I have sensitive skin, 2 different waxes were used for me, one for my skin and the usual one for stubborn hairs. “As you can see, we never re-dip our waxing sticks. This is so that everything remains hygienic for future customers,” she emphasised.
The one difference that I noticed, while reading their tabloid magazine that was recommended to help further distract me, was that the wax they used was hard wax unlike the traditional paper wax.
It is applied hot on the skin in big globs to catch most of the hairs at one go. Wendi said they always check if the customer can handle the pain and will ease any discomfort by catching smaller patches of hair.
Once the wax dries, she slowly peels the sides of it and you can feel the big pull coming as she peels the sides faster and begins to stretch your skin so that the follicles are not constrained. Surprisingly, it wasn’t any more painful than an ear piercing as she did the rest of the area and the posterior. I was even able to concentrate on the juicy gossip I was reading.
Having gone through it, I say ditch that shaver and convert to the Pink Parlour’s Brazilian wax. The treatment is a real godsend despite its pricey rate of $55 compared to its competitor, Strip which cost $48.30 but without that true Pink Parlour pampered feel.
UrbanWire gives Pink Parlour 4 out of 5 stars.
