Concert Review: Twenty One Pilots

If you’ve never heard of Twenty One Pilots, you’re seriously missing out.

Performing for the first time ever in Singapore on July 16 at Suntec City’s Convention Centre, Twenty One Pilots rocked so hard that by the end of the night, fans were left sweating profusely and sore from the continuous raving.

With their fourth and latest album, Blurryface, clinching the top spot on the Billboard charts, Twenty One Pilots is slowly (but surely) on their way to becoming a household name. Formed by lead singer Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun in 2009, the 2-man band from Columbus, Ohio are making waves in the music industry with their unique mix of musical styles such as alternative hip hop, electro pop and indie pop.

Front man Joseph showed no signs of illness it despite being down with a throat infection and cancelling their show in Taipei just 2 days before their Singapore stopover. Thankfully, the duo turned up to deliver a solid performance that didn’t disappoint.

Hysterical screams filled the hall when the lights dimmed and the boys took their places on stage. Donned in their iconic skeleton masks and black hoodies, the twosome kicked off the night with an intense number: “HeavyDirtySoul”, featuring Joseph’s impressive high-speed rapping and vocals complemented by Dun’s soulful drumming.

Switching between strumming the ukulele for “House of Gold” and playing the piano during songs like “Migraine” or even hitting sick electro-pop beats, Joseph made us fully aware of his multiple talents while Dun made our hearts pound to the beats of his drum.

“Car Radio” seemed to be the crowd favourite that night. With Joseph simply stating how their next song was “based on a true story”, fans immediately knew what he was talking about and yelled enthusiastically.

Electrifying Stage Presence

TOP 3

From doing backflips on stage, singing with their light up mic or to asking the crowd to surge forward, and triggering a massive ground-shaking phenomenon, the lads sure knew how to constantly hype up the crowd with their stage theatrics.

Fan interaction was notable too. The duo constantly asked the crowd to double up as backup singers, singing along to certain verses. A lucky fan even got pulled up on stage to do a secret handshake with Dun.

Known as the skeletøn clique, fans of the boys showed their undying support by religiously chanting (and shouting) the lyrics and even humming the instrumental beats with gusto.

On their last number, “Trees”, Joseph humbly professed to the audience: “If you’ll have us, we would love to come back Singapore.” Right on cue, the venue erupted in cheers of approval
