You may have had your annual vegetarian meal on Vesak Day, but why stop there? After all, the benefits of a vegetarian diet include weight loss and longevity. UrbanWire has scouted out 4 vegetarian eateries.
Types Of Vegetarians
There are 8 types of vegetarianism: lacto-ovo, lacto, ovo, fruitarianism, veganism, raw veganism, su-vegetarism and marcobiotic diets.
Café Salivation’s menu can be prepared without onion or garlic, which makes it suitable for su-vegetarians. Su-vegetarianism is tied to Buddhist vegetarianism, but both don’t allow any vegetable with the aroma of onion or garlic into the diet.

Let Café Salivation redefine vegetarian for you with their western cuisine
Located along Syed Alwi Road (Little India), Café Salivation is the latest addition to the Raj Group of restaurants. Pink chandeliers light up this cheerful little establishment while huge orange and pink polka dots adorn the candy-striped walls.
Even on a street teeming with vegetarian restaurants, Café Salivation stands out with its unique food offerings.
Instead of the usual Indian or Chinese fare one comes to expect for vegetarian food, Café Salivation serves a good range of Western cuisine including burgers, pastas and pizzas.
It’s truly an excellent place for vegetarians as those who practise su-vegetarianism also have the option of having their food prepared without onions or garlic.
According to the café’s staff, the most popular dishes are the Mexican ones. The Enchiladas Remo ($7) is a hot favourite and it’s not hard to see why.
Even though it’s cooked with paprika and secret Mexican spices, the stir-fried vegetables strangely remind one of acar, the pickled vegetables. They go well with the doughy tortilla and is made irresistible with the tomato sauce and white cream cheese splashed on top.
Each bite into the tortilla is a satisfying crunch and one can’t help but want more. It would be perfect though if the spices are toned down a little as the tomato and cheese start getting overwhelmed by the second tortilla.
The Paneer Burger ($7.50) is comparatively milder than the Enchiladas Remo and will be a better choice for those who prefer their food less spicy. Served with a side of fries and salad, the Paneer Burger patty is delightfully crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It’s made with an aromatic blend of fresh paneer (curd chesse), potato and spices, so it is sort of like eating a yummy potato croquette burger infused with Indian flavours.
One can also always be assured that they will be served the freshest food at Café Salivation. Take a flip through their menu and you will realize that there is no mock meat in any of their dishes.
Café Salivation’s drinks menu offers customers a great variety as well. Instead of the usual soft drinks, cleanse your palette with a refreshing glass of fruit juice.
Yellow Submarine (on the left) ($6) is chockfull of vitamin C with its mix of red apple and orange juice while Nirvana ($5.50) is a delicious blend of fresh guava, honey and lime.
There’s a good range of coffees and teas as well to nurse through those long chats with your friends at the café.
Service was attentive. The staff refilled our drinks regularly, was well informed about the menu and made good recommendations.
With great ambience, service, and “droolicious food” at budget pricing, Cafe Salivation is definitely worth return trips.
